The concerts are offered as a one-year programme to ten- and eleven-year-old pupils at all municipal primary schools within the Municipality of Aarhus. Every school is offered one concert per concert season. Schools are required to confirm interest immediately after the Summer Holidays, and the tickets are distributed among the schools according to a first-come-first-served principle. In addition to the two ordinary family concerts, the Aarhus Symphony Orchestra gives an annual Summer Family Concert.

The annual Christmas Family Concert features 250 children from the choirs of the schools of the Municipality. At all family concerts the music is introduced by a compère.

For a number of years the Aarhus Sympohony Orchestra has organized pilot projects along the principles introduced by the British music teacher, musician and Music Animateur Richard McNicol. From the autumn of 2003 this initiative will be permanently integrated into the co-operation between the orchestra and the scchols of the Municipality of Aarhus.
