Giancarlo Andretta began his studies in piano, organ and composition ( B. Parut) in Venice and continued his education at the Academy of Music in Vienna studying orchestral conducting (O. Suitner) and Korrepetition Praxis (H.Goertz) and music analysis (K.H. Füssl). In both places he graduated with first rate honours and was awarded distinguished prizes for his work. (Austrian Würdigungs Preis 1989). Giancarlo Andretta began his career as "Solo Korrepetitor" and "Studienleiter" at the Vienna State Opera and the Salzburg Sommerfestspiele (1988-1993). In addition to that he was Studienleiter and musical assistant of many opera productions at the Wiener Konzerthaus, the Opera Bastille in Paris, the O.R.F. Wien and so as for CD labels as Deutsche Gramophon, Nachtigall and R.S:O. (During those years he collaborated with the most important conductors and singers of our time). From 1990 till 1995 he was assistant of P. Steinberg at the R.S.O. Vienna. From 1994-97 he held the position of principal guest conductor and consultant at the opera house of Graz which he left to become chief conductor of the Orchestra Filarmonia Veneta and artistic director of the Teatro Olimpico in Vicenza (1996-2003). In 2003 he was appointed chief conductor of the Aarhus Symphony Orchestra and he has in August 2007 prolonged his contract with the orchestra for the third time - until 2012. Giancarlo Andretta has been and performs regularly as guest conductor in concert halls and opera houses all over Europe. (Venice, Rome, Naples, Vienna, Berlin, Dresden, Münich, Copenhagen, Stockholm, Göteborg, Olso, Lisbon, Prague, Athens etc.) He recorded with the Orchesta del Teatro La Fenice of Venice, with the R.S.O. Vienna, with the Munchener Rundfunk Orchester, with the Basel Symphoniker, with the Orchestra di Padova e del Veneto. In the spring of 2005 Giancarlo Andretta was appointed professor of conducting at the Royal Academy of Music in Copenhagen. He has also been guest professor of piano and Korrepetition Praxis with the Academy of Music in Vienna (1990-1994) and won (1995) the Italian competition for the professorship in conducting. Furthermore he frequently gives masterclasses.
